Indecision Isn’t Always Confusion
by Jana N. Yost
Indecision is often misunderstood. It gets labeled as confusion, but most of the time, it’s not that. It’s protection. Protection from what the decision might change, what it might require, or what it might cost. When you slow it down, you start to see that the pause is not random. It’s doing something.
I see this a lot in people who are thoughtful and capable. They’ve already considered the options. They’re not lacking awareness. What keeps them stuck is the weight of what comes next. Moving forward usually means discomfort, a hard conversation, or a shift they’re not sure they’re ready for.
The problem is, staying in indecision creates its own pressure. What feels like relief in the moment turns into stress over time. The longer you sit in it, the heavier it gets. At some point, it takes more energy to stay where you are than to move.
The work isn’t to rush the decision. It’s to understand what the delay is protecting and decide if that’s still necessary. Clarity doesn’t always come first. Most of the time, it comes after you take a step.
Application
Ask yourself: What is this indecision protecting me from?
Be honest about the cost of staying where you are
Identify one next step, not the whole outcome
Expect some discomfort—it doesn’t mean it’s the wrong move
Move forward with what you already know
